Uc Santa Cruz 2023 Calendar – Students are celebrating the first day of school with a little help from Student Affairs and Success!

After more than two years of virtual and hybrid learning, last Thursday I was fortunate enough to attend an in-person course at UC Santa Cruz at the start of the fall semester. The energy and excitement for the upcoming year is evident in the many events taking place on campus.

To the delight of students and staff alike, the Cornucopia triumphantly took to campus this year. For the first time since 2019, Upper East Field was once again filled with students and their organizations, all with endless opportunities to connect with each other and the campus community. The most anticipated and celebrated event did not disappoint. It involved 257 university departments, offices and registered student organizations with various thematic interests. Sponsored by the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor, Division of Student Affairs and Success, and Department of Athletics and Recreation, Cornucopia features dinner from food service, live performances by nine student bands and multiple DJ sets by UC Santa. Cruz. Student-run radio station, KZSC 88.1.

Shortly after the Cornucopia ended, students filled the Quarry Amphitheater for Movie Night at the Quarry. This free event is the first Welcome Week event hosted by the Department of Student Affairs and Success. In addition to the great UCSC atmosphere under the stars of the mine, DSAS staff served movie snacks and popcorn to all in attendance.

An estimated 1,700 students came to see Amara, a movie set on Santa Cruz’s famous beach. As the movie begins, the students start humming each other silently, excitedly realizing they’ve gone to see a movie early in the evening. The day before, nearly 6,500 students purchased tickets and joined in the fun at the UCSC Boardwalk Frolic! The UCSC Boardwalk Frolic, a traditional and signature UCSC Welcome Week event, is back after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Marisa, a sophomore at UCSC, showed off her time at the event in an Instagram video posted to the UCSC Admissions Instagram account.

Finally, after a successful reception, the focus turned to the first day of training on Thursday, September 22nd. The Office of Student Affairs and Success brought a little fun to the opening ceremony as students and teachers entered their classrooms. Scattered across campus from McHenry to Science Hill, Curry Plaza, and the Humanities/Cowell/Stevenson area – DSAS Cabinet members joined students to share snacks and take “first day of school” photos! The student’s smile says it all: It’s good to be back on campus, it’s good to be a Banana Kitten, it’s exciting to start a new school year! History of and Visual Culture, HAVC, (two courses, one with a Western emphasis and one with a non-Western emphasis).
