As a Jesuit institution, Canisius College maintains a philosophy based on service to the community. And, with economic and social issues common to the urban environment, there are many areas of need in the city of Buffalo that students can contribute to. In any given semester, faculty members can be found guiding hundreds of students from over 70 classes as they apply their classroom learning to a variety of community-building efforts. For example, business students planned, organized and managed a project to benefit a non-profit, and a wild elementary school yard turned an elementary school yard into an urban learning space / outdoor learning space. Others help immigrants prepare for job interviews, teach school children, and conduct violence prevention workshops. The possibilities are endless.
College trips to Jamaica, Mexico, New York City, Appalachia, and El Salvador provide students with additional opportunities to help those in need. International Spring Break is one of the most popular and rewarding experiences, giving students the opportunity to travel and serve communities around the world.
