How To Create A Photo Calendar In Photoshop – I made a Photoshop JavaScript script that builds a calendar. The result of running it in Photoshop (CS2 or later) is a Photoshop document containing six or more layers, which you can then adjust and modify, add your own images, and more.
The script runs in Photoshop CS2 or higher and should work the same on Windows and Mac, but I’ll be using Windows to show a screenshot of it.
How To Create A Photo Calendar In Photoshop
Running the script opens a dialog that allows configuration of the calendar (page size, etc.), but the copy of the script itself can be edited to have precise control over fonts, sizes, margins, etc. The output of the script is as follows. A Photoshop document with a dozen or more layers, which can then be modified/optimized.

My goal in building it was to create landscape open page calendars that my wife and I could use for our daily/weekly schedules (eg, “preschool field trip tomorrow”, “friend so-and-so visiting on Sunday”, etc. ). So I wanted something that looked like a calendar up close…but art from a distance. At least that’s the goal.
Simply select the target year and month (or select ‘All’ months to create 12 separate calendars), adjust the calendar style settings and paper size to your liking, and click the ‘OK’ button.
The script will break it down a bit by building the calendar in a new document, leaving you with about a dozen layers, as shown in the image to the right.

The layers that make up the calendar include a text layer for the month and year text, a rasterized layer for the day of the week text (“Sun-Saturday” in the example at right) and dates (“1-31” in the example at right) and a calendar grid .
Simply by adjusting the style and opacity of the different layers, you can drastically change the look and feel of your calendar. Small changes can have a big impact on the results. Play around. (Let me know if you come across any results you really like.)
There is an empty layer called “Paste your photo here”, where of course you have to insert the photo you want to use. In fact, it shouldn’t be on that layer, but between the picture mask layers, since the mask gives a nice (at least to me) white around the edges.
Reasons To Have A Personalized Calendar
In short, if you have the image open in Photoshop when the script is invoked, it will be inserted into the “Paste your photo here” calendar layer, resized to completely fill the canvas. This only applies if the opened document has only one layer. If you don’t care about automatic resizing, you can simply delete the layer and replace it with one you like.
Either way, once you’ve laid down and moved/resized the image to your liking, be sure to adjust the mask as well. Sometimes expanding the image to the edges works well, sometimes shrinking the image to the center works better.
There is an “attrib” layer with a calendar attribute. This script sets the url for this page, but you may want to change it to your homepage, image copyright notice, etc. Or maybe just get rid of it. L.

There is also an image description text layer whose visibility is disabled by default. This is just an idea for the image description post. Replace its text with the image description or any text of your choice (in the first example above, I used “Natalie and Alan, July 14, 2006”) and make it visible. It will appear at the bottom right of the image.
You own the copyright to any calendar you create. I own the copyright to the script but not the output. You can change the output, i.e. the document created by the script, in any way you want.
Of course, if you add a photo to your calendar, like any image, make sure you have permission to use that image.

I pulled most of the language data from this page and had to guess what font to apply to most of it. I don’t even know if some of them are real languages. Let me know if you have any questions.

I think it’s common in some parts of the world to annotate calendars with day numbers, but I’d never heard of the idea until someone asked for it. It turns out that there are two common but conflicting ways of calculating week numbers.
The Show week numbers option in the dialog can be changed from None to Left or Right to indicate that you want week numbers and where the extra columns should be placed. You can also choose between two methods of counting weeks.
Image orientation has nothing to do with how the paper is loaded into the printer, but with the style in which the calendar is made. Above is an example of my brother’s landscape style wedding. An example of my little boy is in portrait mode.

This option is enabled by default and uses rasterization and blending to compress multiple individual date layers (“1”, “2”, … “31”) into a single layer. You can do the same grouping for day names (“Monday”, “Tuesday”…) and week numbers if you want.
The beauty of this is that you can adjust the look of all the dates (or days or weeks) at once by custom blending layer styles.
The downside is that you can’t adjust the font or size of the text, or anything else specific to the text, because there is no longer a separate text layer.

So, by unchecking this option, you can choose to leave the individual text layers intact. When finished, they will be placed in their own group to reduce visual clutter in the layers panel.
When autosave is enabled, one or more newly created documents are automatically saved to a file. The Directory element indicates where they should be stored, while the PSD filename pattern indicates how the files should be named.
In the filename example, the sequences “MM” and “YYYY” are replaced with calendar month and year numbers (two and four digits, respectively). For example, in the example “Calendar_YYYY_MM”, the calendar for April 2013 would be called “Calendar_2013_04.PSD”.

If you always want different options than the default (different language, paper size, etc.), set them as desired and click the Save button in the Default Configuration section of the dialog. It writes to a file of your choice, which is automatically read when the script starts.
Clicking the “Delete” button deletes the file, so you end up with a set of downloaded defaults. To be on the safe side, you must first check the box to enable the delete button.
Since some layers are rasterized, it’s best if you can print directly at 100% without resizing. This should be automatic if you choose the right paper size, DPI and reasonable margins.

I have a Canon XP810 and I find Canon’s “High Resolution Photo Matte Paper” MP-101 to be perfect. It looks like regular printer paper, albeit a bit heavy. It’s 100% matte with no sheen at all, so you can write on it with a pencil or pen.
You can have the script add notes to specific dates based on a list found in an external file. Note support is basic at best, but it’s useful for marking holidays, birthdays, and other dates that might be important to you.
When annotations are enabled, the script reads the annotations file (for example, for the 2010 calendar, the default is “CalendarData2010.txt” in the home directory). Here is an example.

A date without a year applies to any calendar year, while a date with a year applies only to calendars created for that year. This allows you to add year-specific elements to your notes file without worrying that they might appear in another year’s calendar.
The following special “[…]” settings can be assigned to commented lines, or, as we will see later, applied independently to all subsequent lines.
Change the font of the annotation with the given name. You should use Photoshop’s internal name for the font, which is usually not visible in the name displayed in the font dialog. See my post on discovering Photoshop’s internal font names for the names to use for any font here.
