Although Georgetown County students may see more vacation time in the future, they look forward to returning to school as the district plans its academic calendar for the next two years.

GEORGETOWN — Georgetown County students may see more vacation days in the future, but they will start school earlier under proposed changes to the district’s academic calendar for the next two years.

District Human Resources Director Chelice Waites told school officials on Jan. 18 meetings of the calendar planning committee saw that other school districts in South Carolina went on a regular schedule of the year round and wanted to follow suit.
The revised annual calendar still allows for eight weeks of vacation and will still require students to attend 180 days of classes, but the days will be more spread out throughout the year.
The main difference between the two calendars is that students have a week off each quarter. Students traditionally have one week before Thanksgiving, two weeks before Christmas and one week before spring break.

Students have a week off in October, November and April, plus the usual two weeks before Christmas in a modified form throughout the year.
Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, teachers will begin on July 26 and students will return in August. 2. The last day of the semester will be Dec. 20 and the academic year ends on May 24.
This school year, teachers returned on Aug. 11 and students started on Aug. 18. Traditionally, the first semester after the Christmas holidays ends in mid-January. School ends June 3.

To adapt to the new schedule, the district is planning a bridge year in 2022-2023 that follows the traditional calendar, but with teachers and students returning to school earlier.
The teachers of the next school year start in August. 1 and students will return to class on August. 8. The last day of the semester will be on Dec. 16, 2022, instead of this year when it ended on Jan. 13.
“I like the semester ending in December,” said school member Bill Gaskins of the proposed changes. “Instead of cutting that time, between the time our students get home and the second semester starts.”

Waites said one of the committee’s goals is to have classes end before Memorial Day in the future.
The proposed new calendar will now go to local officials and the public for feedback, with the first reading expected in February. School assembly 1.
