Duke Academic Calendar 2020 – DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Duke University announced Tuesday evening that all classes on campus will be suspended until further notice as the spread of the coronavirus continues.
The university announced this in a press release, adding that the school “is transitioning to distance learning.”

Duke officials also said that students’ spring break will continue through Sunday, March 22, and classes will resume on March 23.

The school went even further, saying that all undergraduate, graduate and professional students who are out of town for spring break “should not return to the Duke campus if possible.”
“This was not an easy decision and was made only after considering a number of available options in light of the rapidly changing situation in North Carolina and nationally,” the statement said.
Over the past several weeks, a task force across Duke has been working diligently to prepare and plan our university’s response to COVID-19. In recent days, it became clear that the spread of the virus continues throughout the country. While this depends on circumstances beyond our control, we can take steps now to minimize risks to the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and the broader Duke community, especially as students and faculty prepare to return from spring break.

In order to give students and faculty time to make this transition, undergraduate spring break will be extended to Sunday, March 22nd, and classes will resume on Monday, March 23rd. Colleges and universities inform their students about their specific timetables.
Second, all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are currently out of town for spring break should avoid returning to the Duke campus as much as possible. We know there are undergraduate students who are currently on campus or need to access campus housing this week for various reasons. Those students who need to return to campus, even for a short time, must register with Student Affairs in advance so that we can support the limited number of campuses. Students living in on-campus housing or in the Durham area should be aware that access to many facilities and services, such as dining, recreation, and libraries, will be limited. In addition, classes and gatherings of students will decrease.

We know that this is a serious disruption to everyone’s education, research and work, and it also raises many questions and concerns. Starting tomorrow (Wednesday), undergraduate, graduate and professional students, as well as faculty from the university, its schools and student affairs, will begin receiving specific information about course plans, information technology and support services. We recognize that there is much concern and uncertainty about the events planned on campus during the semester, including many of our potential student travel programs. We are closely monitoring the guidelines of our health officials and experts to minimize the risk of infection and transmission of the virus without restricting all activities on campus.
Immediately, we are postponing, canceling, or virtualizing all Duke-sponsored in-person events with more than 50 people on or off campus between now and April 20. This includes events, trips, student programs. , meetings, exhibitions, conferences and social events.
If you are planning an event with fewer than 50 people, we ask that you consider the following questions to determine if your programs should also be canceled or rescheduled:

At all events and gatherings, we encourage faculty, staff, and students to remind each other of hygiene rules; if you are ill, voluntarily withdraw from the event; and build dormitories for sick or quarantined people. Further guidance on sporting events will be provided. We will continue to evaluate our policies to address changing circumstances, including a possible extension to April 20.
