Each year, the UCA publishes a booklet listing the readings for the coming church year, along with information about related books, online resources, podcasts, and books that may be useful for Lectionary preachers.
A few years ago I worked with MediaCom to edit the Lectionary page, a task that combined my role with that of Worship. The dictionary helps preachers use discipline in engaging with the Scriptures rather than falling into the trap of preaching only popular or popular passages. For many churches where a large number of evangelicals hold services, the use of tongues also brings consistency from week to week.

There are many language resources and resources available online, including many written lists. I also turn to great podcasts these days. Many will be familiar with Love in the World, a self-help linguistics book that I often use and sometimes contribute to, which now has a handy app available for Apple or Android devices. The Revised Common Lectionary is a collection of Bible readings for use in Protestant Christian worship, providing the liturgical year and how to celebrate feasts and seasons. It was officially published in 1994. It was preceded by the General Lectionary compiled in 1983, itself preceded by the COCU Lectionary published in 1974 by the Consultation on the Church in Union (COCU). This doctrine is derived from the various Protestant canons in use today, which in turn are based on the 1969 Ordo Lectionum Missae, a triennial language created by the Roman Catholic Church, following the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
How To Use The Revised Common Lectionary
As in its predecessors, the readings are prescribed for each week: usually a passage from the Old Testament or the Acts of the Apostles; a passage from one of the Psalms; another from the Epistle or Book of Revelation; and finally a passage from one of the four Gospels.
Like its predecessors, it ran for three years; the gospel readings of the first year (year A) are taken from the gospel of Matthew, those of the second year (or year B) from the gospel of Mark, and those of the third year (or year C) from the gospel of Luke. Portions of John’s Gospel are read throughout Easter and used in other liturgical seasons, such as Advent, Christmas, and Lent, where appropriate. With the beginning of Advent on November 28th, we become Year C.
The Revised Common Lectionary is used in its original or adapted form by churches around the world. Protestant denominations in the United States that use the Revised Common Lectionary include: American Baptist Churches, USA; Christ’s family; Disciples of Christ; Episcopal Church in the United States of America; Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; Moravian Church in America; Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod; Presbyterian Church in America; The Reformed Church in America; United Church of Christ; Methodist Church; Unitarian Christian Brotherhood. The Roman Catholic Church uses a modified version of the RCL.
